Eleven entities, including two international firms, participated in the various pre-bid meetings recently held by Coal India Ltd (CIL), in connection with the Central PSU’s maiden attempt at importing coal.
These pre-bid meetings, held on June 14 and June 17, aimed at helping bidders keen to participate in the coal import tender get a better understanding of the bid document and scope of work.
It may be recalled that CIL, earlier in June 2022, floated three international tenders for sourcing coal from the overseas markets, as directed by the Central government.
Prominent participants in the pre-bid meeting include Adani Enterprises, Mohit Minerals and Chettinad Logistics Pvt Ltd. The overseas entities included one coal exporting firm from Indonesia.
Following feedback from participants at the pre-bid meetings, some important amendments have been made to the coal import tenders:

CIL has amended the bid document and a corrigendum has already been floated on e-procurement portal to hasten the process, the Central coal PSU said.
It may be mentioned that the coal that lands on lndian shores, quantity assessment and quality testing shall have to be done through CIL’s empanelled third party sampling agencies, CIL said.
On June 8, 2022, CIL had floated a short-term indent-based international competitive bid for sourcing 2.416 million tonnes of overseas coal on behalf of state power generation companies and independent power producers (IPP), for blending with the domestic coal. This tender closes on June 29, 2022.
Closely following this, two more medium-term tenders for sourcing 3 million tonnes each at the western and eastern ports of the country were floated to keep coal on tap for immediate availability and future use. Both these tenders are scheduled to close on July 5, 2022.
