The total volume of interregional electricity transfer grew 7.8 per cent year-on-year during the first half (H1: April to September) of FY25.
According to latest statistics released by Grid Controller of India Ltd (GRID-INDIA), the total volume of electricity transfer in H1FY25 stood at 134,714 MU (million units or million kwh or Gwh), which was 7.8 per cent higher than the comparable 123,918 MU in H1FY24.
Here are some highlights:
- Exports from Western Region to Northern Region (denoted as WR-NR) stood at 54,099 MU in H1FY25, growing 34.3 per cent year-on-year. This transfer accounted for 40.2 per cent of the total interregional transfer volume in H1FY25, significantly higher than 32.5 per cent in H1FY24.
- WR saw a 20.8 per cent growth in exports in H1FY25, coupled with a much smaller 4.5 per cent rise in imports. This resulted in WR becoming a net exporter of electricity to the tune of 59,103 MU in H1FY25, higher than 45,974 MU in H1FY24.
- NR imported 64,797 MU of electricity in H1FY25, around 19 per cent higher than in H1FY24. Coupled with this was a 26.5 per cent decline in exports. This led to NR becoming a bigger net importer of electricity – 55,098 MU in H1FY25 as against 41,478 MU in H1FY24.
- SR witnessed a 58.7 per cent growth in electricity exports that reached 10,875 MU in H1FY25. Most of these exports were destined to WR. Imports by SR fell 10.9 per cent in H1FY25. With the result, SR was a smaller net importer in H1FY25 (volume: 22,385 MU) as compared with H1FY24 when the import volume was 30,492 MU.
- ER was a net exporter of electricity in H1FY25, albeit to a lesser extent than in H1FY24. ER’s net exports fell to 18,714 MU in H1FY25 from 25,787 MU a year ago.
- Overall, WR and ER were net exporters of electricity in H1FY25 while NR, SR and NER were net importers.
IR capacity
India’s total interregional transfer capacity is projected to grow to 142,940 MW by March 2027 (end of FY27) from 118,740 MW as of September 30, 2024. No new interregional transfer capacity was commissioned in H1FY25.
