Adani Power (Jharkhand) Ltd [APJL], a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd, has fully commissioned its 1,600-mw Godda ultra-supercritical power plant in Jharkhand.
In a release, Adani Power said that APJL has started commercial operations of Unit-2 of 800-mw capacity of the 2×800-mw Godda ultra-supercritical power plant at Jharkhand, on June 25, 2023.
Accordingly, APJL will hereinafter export entire power generated from the 2×800 mw Godda power plant on commercial basis, directly to Bangladesh through the dedicated 400kV transmission lines, with net capacity of 1,496 mw.
It may be recalled that in November 2017, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) executed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with Adani Power (Jharkhand) Ltd to procure 1,496 mw net capacity power from the 2×800 mw Godda ultra-supercritical power project in Jharkhand. In April 2023, Unit-1 of 800 mw of the Godda power plant was commissioned and began supplying 748 mw of power to Bangladesh.
Several firsts
The project, which has deployed for the first time in India state-of-the-art Ultra-supercritical technology, also incorporates for benign operations Flue Gas Desulphuriser (“FGD”) and Selective Catalytic Reconverter equipments, to minimize emissions and in compliance with futuristic norms announced by the Ministry of Environment & Forests and Climate Change.

Replacing expensive liquid fuel
The electricity supplied from Godda will significantly improve the situation in the neighbouring country as it will replace expensive power generated from liquid fuel, bringing down the average cost of power purchased. In a release dated April 2023, Adani Power had said that the installed capacity of heavy fuel oil (HFO)-based plants in Bangladesh is about 6,329 mw and of high-speed diesel (HSD)-based plants is about 1,290 mw, totaling to over 7,600 mw, As per BPDB’s annual report for the financial year 2021-22, the total tariff of HFO-based plants is around US cents 21 per kwh and total tariff of HSD-based power plants is around US cents 149 per kwh, which is far higher than the tariff of Godda power plant that is estimated to be around US cents 9 per kwh.
