Adani Electricity’s vigilance team raided two industrial units in the western suburbs of Mumbai, detecting electricity theft of more than Rs.50 lakh.
In a release, Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd (AEML) said that after analysing feeder data, the utility’s vigilance team detected discrepancy in supply and billing data and raided two industrial units in the western suburbs detecting electricity theft worth Rs.50.19 lakh.
After raiding Altaf Shaikh and Sayyad Imran’s vertical moulding unit at Irani Wadi in Malad East, vigilance team found that, consumer was using direct supply which is illegal under Section 135 of Indian Electricity Act, 2003, wherein vigilance team assessed that, over last two years the industrial unit had stolen electricity worth Rs.28 44 lakh.
Similarly, after raiding an electroplating unit run by Hamid Ulla Shaikh in Gandhinagar area of Charkop in Kandivali West, vigilance team found that the owner was using direct supply and vigilance team assessing that, unit had stolen electricity worth Rs.21.75 lakh over period of two years.
Adani Electricity spokesperson said, “Adani Electricity like any responsible utility is dutifully required to act tough against those involved in power theft. Power theft puts tariff burden on honest and paying consumers. It is our duty to protect the interest of honest and paying consumers.”

Adani Electricity has registered FIR against the owners of both these units under the relevant sections of Indian Electricity Act, 2003 and Indian Penal Code at Kandivali Police Station.
The AEML statement also said that the number of FIRs lodged by the utility for electricity thefts jumped to 169 in the April-June period of 2022, as against just 45 in the same period of 2021. Likewise, the number of cases booked for irregularity rose to 1,983 from 1,137. By the same comparison the assessed value of irregularity and theft almost trebled to Rs.9.13 crore from Rs.3.61 crore in the April-June period of 2021.
