Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has successfully manufactured India’s first set of catalysts for selective catalyst reactors (SCR) for limiting NOx emissions from thermal power plants.
In a release, BHEL said that the first set of indigenously manufactured SCR catalysts for the 5×800 mw Yadadri Thermal Power Station in Telangana, were flagged off by Ms Renuka Gera, Director (Industrial Systems & Products), BHEL, from the company’s Solar Business Division (SBD) unit in Bengaluru.
Pankaj Gupta, Executive Director, SBD; Anil Joshi, Executive Director, Industry Sector and other employees of SBD were present on the occasion.
These catalysts were hitherto being imported and this is a significant milestone under the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government of India, BHEL said.
BHEL has set up a state-of-the-art SCR catalyst manufacturing facility at its SBD unit to cater to NOx abatement in thermal power stations.
Recognising the long-term severe effects of NOx and in consideration of the Ministry of Environment and Forest’s notification, Telangana State Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TSGENCO) had placed an order for SCRs for 5×800 mw Yadadri TPS. Likewise, Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd (Mahagenco) has placed an order for SCRs for its 1×660-mw Bhusawal thermal power plant, while West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd has done so for the 1×660-mw Sagardighi thermal power plant. National Aluminium Company Ltd has also mandated BHEL to supply SCRs for the 1×18.5-mw Damanjodi thermal power plant.
BHEL has been committed to environment protection and offers a complete bouquet of environment friendly technologies for thermal power plants. In addition to high efficiency boilers, BHEL supplies electrostatic precipitators, Flue Gas Desulphurisation units and Selective Catalyst Reactors for which the company has indigenised the technology absorbed from market leader NANO, based in the Republic of Korea.
Major order from Adani Power
It may be mentioned that on August 21, 2023, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd reported the winning of an order valued at around Rs.4,000 crore (excluding taxes) from Mahan Energen Ltd, formerly Essar Power MP Ltd and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd. The order relates to supply of two boilers and turbine-generator (BTG) sets for the 2×800-mw Mahan supercritical power plant coming up Bandhuara in Madhya Pradesh. The mandate also includes associated auxiliaries and C&I, apart from supervision of erection and commissioning. The first BTG set will be supplied within 31 months and the second in 35 months from the order date. BHEL said that the boilers will be manufactured at the Trichy plant in Tamil Nadu while the TG sets will come from the Hardwar plant in Uttarakhand.
