Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), during Q2 of FY23, successfully tested its highest-rating transformer, a company presentation said.
Citing the development as a significant R&D achievement, BHEL said that in Q2 (July to September) of FY23, the company designed, manufactured and successfully completed the dynamic short-circuit testing of its highest rating 3-phase station transformer.
The 144MVA, 400kV transformer will be deployed at the upcoming 3×800-mw Patratu supercritical power project (Phase-I) in Jharkhand. The coal-fired Patratu project is being set up by Patratu Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (PVUNL) — a joint venture between NTPC (equity: 74 per cent) and Jharkhand Bijli Vitaran Nigam Ltd (26 per cent). The overall project involves the setting up of five units of 800-mw, with aggregate capacity of 4,000 mw.
Another achievement testifying BHEL’s R&D capabilities was the design, manufacturing, testing and supply of high-rating motor. The presentation said that this 6.6kV motor (16-pole, 2,150kW) is largest rating motor of this type and is suitable for hazardous area applications.
As of September 30, 2022, BHEL had 5,163 patents and copyrights. During the first half (H1: April to September) of FY23, the company had spent around Rs.264 crore on R&D, the presentation said.
Order book
During H1 of FY23, BHEL reported a total order inflow of Rs.14,511 crore and the outstanding order book, as of September 30, 2022, stood at Rs.1,06,376 crore. The power sector accounted for 84 per cent of the order book, followed by industry with 12 per cent and exports with 4 per cent.
In the power transmission sector, BHEL received a number of significant orders, including:
- Orders for setting up the 400/220kV Neemuch substation (MP) and extension of 400kV Chittorgarh substation (Rajasthan) and 400kV Mandsaur substation (MP) from Neemuch Transmission Ltd, a project SPV of Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) that is setting up an interstate power transmission scheme straddling Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan
- Supply, inspection, testing and commissioning of three units 500 MVA, 400kV interconnecting transformers (ICTs) and 13 units of 500 MVA, 765kV ICTs at Navsari, Gujarat from PGCIL.
- Supply of five 160 MVA, 220/66kV power transformers from Punjab State Transmission Corporation Ltd

It may be noted that transformers and motors fall under the “industry” category. The “power” sector typically includes power generation equipment such as steam generators (boilers) and turbine-generators.
