Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has reported the winning of a major EPC order from NTPC relating to the Lara super thermal power project (STPP) in Chhattisgarh.
In a regulatory filing, BHEL said that it has secured an order of unspecified value for setting up the 2×800-mw Lara supercritical thermal power project (Stage 2) at Lara in Chhattisgarh, through international competitive bidding.
Scope of works
The scope of work includes design, engineering, manufacture, supply, construction, erection, testing & commissioning with civil & structural works for the EPC package with steam generator capable of biomass co-firing, steam turbine, generator & auxiliaries, emission control systems, control and instrumentation, balance of plant packages etc.
Commissioning schedule
BHEL said that Unit-1 of 800 mw will be commissioned within 48 months from zero date, followed by Uni-2 of same capacity within 52 months from zero date.
Investment approval
In an independent stock exchange communication, NTPC, on August 30, 2023, said that its board had accorded investment approval for the Lara super thermal power project (Stage II) at an estimated cost of Rs.15,530 crore.
Lara STPP (Stage 1)
It may be mentioned that the current project, Lara STPP (Stage 2), aims to add two units of 800 mw to Lara STPP (Stage 1) that also has installed capacity of 1,600-mw coming through two supercritical coal-fired units of 800-mw each. Stage 1 was fully commissioned in July 2020. The main plant equipment suppliers associated with Stage 1 included Doosan (for boilers) and Hitachi in collaboration with BGR Energy Systems (for turbine-generators).
Project Area
The Lara super thermal power project (Stage 1 and Stage 2) is coming on a total of 2,400 acres of land spread over nine villages — Armuda, Chhapora, Bodajharia, Devalpura, Mahloi, Riyapalli, Lara, Jhilgitar and Kandagarh – in Pussore taluk of Raigarh district, Chhattisgarh.

Coal
Most of the coal required for the Lara STPP (Stage 1 and Stage 2) will be sourced from the Talaipalli coal block in Chhattisgarh, allotted to NTPC.
