Coal India, in a statement, said that the company’s coal supplies to the power sector have risen 15.6 per cent, year on year, in April 2022.
With the intense demand for coal continuing unabated driven by an upward spiral in the electricity generation CIL pushed up its supplies to power plants of the country to 49.7 million tonnes in April 2022. This is 6.7 million tonnes more supply compared to 43 million tonnes in April 2021.
On an average CIL supplied 1.66 million tonnes of coal per day to power utilities in April 2022 which grew to 1.73 million tonnes during the last week. Average supply per day is at par with what was programmed by CIL for this sector during the first quarter of FY23, CIL said.
To keep up with the increased appetite for coal, CIL accelerated its production to 53.5 million tonnes in April 2022, logging a strong 27.6 per cent year-on-year growth. This is 11.6 million tonnes higher compared to 41.9 million tonnes of April 2021.
MCL, SECL, NCL and WCL have significantly raised the production in April’22. With higher output CIL would is aiming to increase its despatches further, especially to power plants in the coming months.
Coal output of April 2022 has been the highest ever April level, eclipsing the previous peak of 45.3 million tonnes achieved in April 2019.

CIL’s total off-take has risen sharply to 57.5 million tonnes in April 2022, logging 6 per cent growth compared to 54.2 million tonnes of same month last year. Coal off-take during April 2022 exceeded the production level of that month by 4 million tonnes.
