GE to build substations for ReNew Power’s Narendra-Koppal project

GE’s Grid Solutions business announced that it has been awarded a contract by ReNew Power Pvt Ltd to build two 400kV substations in Karnataka, related to the Narendra-Koppal power transmission scheme that ReNew Power is developing under the TBCB route.

The contract involves construction of:

  1. A 400/220kV air-insulated substation at Koppal
  2. A 400kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation at Narendra
  3. Two 125 MVAR 400kV reactors for each of the above-mentioned substations

 

GE is expected to complete its work in three phases—two in December 2022 and one in August 2023. All products are being manufactured in India, for India.

 

This is GE’s Grid Solutions business’ third substation project with ReNew Power, GE said.

GE’s multi-million dollar contract with ReNew Power is part of the Narendra-Koppal transmission scheme. The scheme in turn is part of the planned interstate-based evacuation infrastructure that will create 66.5 GW of renewable energy zones in India. The Narendra-Koppal project, involving the evacuation of 2.5 GW from wind energy zones in Karnataka, is part of the first of three phases of the overall project.

 

Project background

It may be recalled that on December 13, 2021, bid process coordinator PFC Consulting Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Power Finance Corporation, transferred project special purpose vehicle “Koppal-Narendra Transmission Ltd” to ReNew Transmission Ventures Ltd, the successful bidder.

A wholly-owned subsidiary of PFCCL, Koppal-Narendra Transmission Ltd, was incorporated in November 2019 for the development of a transmission scheme officially designated as “Evacuation of power from RE sources in Koppal Wind Energy Zones (Karnataka) (2,500 mw)”.

The project was awarded to ReNew Power under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) modality.
