Genus Power Infrastructures Ltd has become the first company in the APAC region to cross the milestone of supplying 1.5 million smart meters to EESL.
Genus Power, a prominent electricity metering solutions provider, said in a release that it has become the first company in the Asia-Pacific Region to cross the milestone of supplying 1.5 million smart meters to Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL).
Genus Power today has an installed base of over 60 million electricity meters.
EESL is the nodal agency for implementing the Union power ministry’s plan entailing the rollout of 240 million smart meters over the next three years.
Genus Power’s landmark achievement bears testimony of the manufacturing capacity of an Indian company for advanced metering solutions, amid global competition, a release from Genus Power observed. Genus Power is the largest supplier of smart meters in India and is currently executing a big contract for EESL.
Excited with this achievement, Jitendra K Agarwal, Jt Managing Director, Genus Power said, “As a leader in the smart metering industry, we are proud to be the first in India to achieve this figure. The Smart Meters commissioned in various states have played an important role during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The nationwide lockdown and social distancing prohibited discoms from physically taking the monthly meter readings. All states where Genus Power smart meters were installed have been able to take readings remotely that resulted in bill generation and collection, helping discoms to sustain their operations.”
It may be recalled that discoms in states like Bihar, where commercial efficiency in the power distribution chain has traditionally been poor, could earn revenue of Rs.5 lakh per day during the COVID-19 lockdown period, thanks to the installation of smart meters. (read more).
Genus Power has accredited testing laboratories for electricity meters, located in Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Assam.
Saurabh Kumar, Managing Director, EESL said, “Smart meters offer numerous benefits to discoms as well as consumers. They also have the potential to make the power sector increasingly resilient, transparent, digitized, and accountable. A seamless and consumer-focused energy ecosystem is the way forward and thus we must encourage the adoption of smart meters across the country.”
Genus Power has manufacturing capacity of 10 million meters per year, and today has an installed base of over 60 million electricity meters. The Jaipur-headquartered company has embarked on an ambitious programme on smart metering in line with the Smart Grid vision of the government of India. The company is currently exporting its products to Middle East, Africa and the APAC region, the company release observed.
