Hitachi Energy has successfully produced India’s highest power-rated Scott transformers, the company announced in a release.
Hitachi Energy said that it has reached a significant milestone in its commitment to Indian Railways by producing (including design and manufacture) India’s highest power-rated Scott transformers of 100 MVA at its Maneja facility, Vadodara, Gujarat.
This marks a significant achievement as the transformers are the first-of-their-kind within the Hitachi Energy group worldwide, the release said.
Under a comprehensive agreement with BNC Power Projects Ltd, Hitachi Energy India Ltd will supply 14 high-rating transformers to enhance the infrastructure of the Indian Railways. This includes 12 units of 100 MVA 132/2x55kV Scott-connected transformers and two units of 100 MVA 220/2x55kV Scott-connected transformers.
The flag-off event for the first unit of 132kV Scott Transformer was held on February 29, 2024 in the presence of N. Venu, MD & CEO, India & South Asia, Hitachi Energy, and other dignitaries.
The product certification was obtained from the Rating & Design Standard Organization (RDSO)- Indian Railways technical body, after the successful completion of all mandatory tests. The first unit of the transformer successfully completed the dynamic short circuit test (prototype test) at the Central Power Research Institute (CPRI) in Bengaluru and all other factory acceptance tests.
These Scott connected transformers are pivotal in upgrading India’s rail infrastructure, allowing trains to achieve speeds of up to 160kmph, a 20 per cent increase from the current maximum speed of 130kmph. This upgrade will improve the reliability of passenger trains and increase the train speed from the existing top speed. This would be first step towards large-scale usage of Scott transformers by Indian Railways in its passenger rail network.
Hitachi Energy’s Made in India Scott Transformers truly signify the commitment and innovation that the company brings to the Indian Railways, furthering the country’s journey towards a modern, efficient, and sustainable transportation network, the release said.
