IEX

Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) achieved monthly electricity traded volume of 9,622 MU in February 2025, marking a 9 per cent increase on year-on-year basis.

Besides, a total of 16.37 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) were traded during the month, marking a 167 per cent year-on-year increase, a release by IEX said.

The release noted that in February 2025, the country’s energy consumption reached 131.5 BU. Average daily energy consumption in February 2025 increased by 7 per cent as compared to average daily energy consumption in February 2024.

India experienced milder winters and an unusually warm February, leading to a steady rise in power demand across most regions. Notably, on February 7, 2025, peak power demand reached 238 GW, compared to maximum peak power demand of 222 GW on February 23, 2024.

Despite the surge in demand, prices on power exchanges were lower compared to previous year, owing to higher supply side liquidity in the DAM segment. The Market Clearing Price in the Day Ahead Market at Rs.4.38 per unit during February 2025, declined 11 per cent year-on-year. These prices presented an opportunity for discoms and commercial & industrial (C&I) consumers to meet their demand at a competitive price.

A total of 16.37 lakh RECs were traded in the trading sessions held on February 12, 2025 and February 27, 2025, at a clearing price of Rs.350 per REC and Rs.349 per REC, respectively. REC traded volume in February’25 increased by 167 per cent on year-on-year basis.

The next REC trading sessions on IEX are scheduled on March 12, 2025 and March 26, 2025, the release added.
