IndiGrid commissions its first BESS with solar panels at Dhule substation

 

IndiGrid (India Grid Trust) has recently installed and commissioned a pilot project of a solar panel bank coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the InvIT’s Dhule substation in Maharashtra.

 

This BESS-cum-solar panel facility will be used to meet the substation’s auxiliary consumption requirement, a release by IndiGrid said.

 

Management of emissions

Generating meaningful impact under the Environment, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices has been one of the strategic tenets for IndiGrid over the last few years and the company has undertaken multiple initiatives to drive change. Mindful management of its emissions is a key focus area for IndiGrid and the latest solar panel banks plus BESS commissioning is a step towards achieving the company’s sustainability goals. The best-in-class BESS solution, coupled with solar generation, will not only reduce our emissions but also act as a prototype for expanding IndiGrid’s presence in energy transition opportunities in the sector, the release said.

 

Dhule substation

The 2×1500 MVA, 765/400kV Dhule substation, located in Maharashtra, is part of the interstate transmission system (ISTS) scheme housed under “Bhopal Dhule Transmission Company Ltd (BDTCL)”. Commissioned in June 2015, BDTCL is now part of IndiGrid’s portfolio which today comprises 17 power transmission projects and 100 MW (AC) of solar generation capacity. The power transmission portfolio consists of 46 transmission lines spanning around 8,416 ckm and 13 substations with an aggregate transformation capacity of 17,550 MVA.

 

Energy transition opportunities

Commenting on the project, Harsh Shah, Chief Executive Officer of IndiGrid, said,” At IndiGrid it’s our constant endeavor to manage the environmental impact of our operations and this pilot project is a milestone for us. This facility will also act as a test bed for augmenting our capabilities to participate in energy transition opportunities in solar and BESS space. As the operations at this project stabilize, we look forward to replicating similar systems across our other substations and reducing emissions of our operations.”
