The renewable arm of Larsen & Toubro’s Power Transmission & Distribution business has landed an EPC mandate to build a mega solar power plant in Saudi Arabia.
In a stock exchange filing, L&T said that the renewables arm of its Power T&D business has secured a turnkey EPC contract from a consortium of ACWA Power and Water & Electricity Holding Company to build the 1.5 GW Sudair solar photovoltaic project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Water & Electricity Holding Company is a subsidiary of Public Investments Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF)
The project is coming up over a 30.8-sqkm land parcel in Riyadh province. Apart from 1.5GW of solar PV modules, the project will also have single-axial trackers and inverters. This project is considered the largest solar plant in Saudi Arabia with PPA signed. It is also one of the largest such plants in the world, the L&T release observed.
“With several GWs of solar EPC experience, L&T has emerged as a global technology player for solar plants, noted S. N. Subrahmanyan, CEO & Managing Director, Larsen & Toubro.
Though L&T has not specified the contract value, it is between Rs.5,000 crore and Rs.7,000 crore.

The ambitions of Saudi Arabia’s National Renewable Energy Program (NREP) are on track. As part of the NREP, Sudair Solar PV Project has been awarded to PIF and its partner, ACWA Power. This project is part of the 70 per cent of the target capacity of 58.7 GW of the Kingdom assigned to Public Investment Fund (PIF). It may be noted that Renewable Energy Project Development Office (REPDO) would undertake competitive tendering for the remaining 30 per cent, as announced by the Ministry of Energy in 2019, L&T said.
Commenting on the development, T. Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities), L&T, said “KSA aims to become a pioneer in renewable energy and we are happy to be a part of this journey. This is yet another recognition of our capabilities to construct mega projects to speed and scale.”
