Mahindra Powerol has entered the high kVA diesel genset market. The business unit of the$19-bln Mahindra Group unveiled a 500 kVA DG set in an event held in Mumbai, on April 23, 2018.
Mahindra Powerol will now be producing 400/500/625 kVA gensets using Perkins 2000 Series engines. The new range of gensets has been designed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, and will be manufactured at the Chakan plant near Pune, Maharashtra.
Addressing the media, senior Mahindra Powerol officials said that Mahindra Powerol today has over 4 lakh gensets installed, including 5,000 in the overseas markets. Mahindra Powerol is the second largest genset manufacturer in India, and is the leader in providing power backup solution to the telecom sector. In fact, Mahindra Powerol, through its “Teleinfra Management (TIM)” business unit, undertakes total power management of telecom infrastructure.
With the launch of these gensets, Mahindra Powerol now has a complete range of gensets starting from 5 kVA to 625 kVA.
The Perkins 2000 Series electronic engines are well known for their quality and efficiency, officials said. Among several technical advantages, Perkins engines have the best power-to-weight ratio, it was explained. Perkins manufactures its 2000 Series engines at its manufacturing facilities at Hosur in Karnataka and Aurangabad in Maharashtra.
The new DG gensets will be equipped with advanced controllers. These gensets will have the “DIGI – Sense” technology, developed by Mahindra Powerol. DIGI-Sense will enable users to remotely monitor the performance of the DG sets.
It may be recalled that in March 2018, Mahindra Powerol launched a genset power by gas. This is India’s first gas-fired genset, it is learnt.
The size of the Indian genset market is an estimated 1.17 lakh units, valued at Rs.6,394 crore. Around 75 per cent of this volume is accounted for by gensets in the sub-75kVA segment. The market for gensets above 500kVA is around 5,500 units, representing just 5 per cent in volume terms. However, in value terms, the market share of this category is around 35 per cent.
