Netinium and Wirepas announce partnership for smart metering solutions

Netinium and Wirepas have announced a partnership to enable scalable and standardized smart metering solutions for utilities worldwide.

The collaboration leverages Wirepas’ game-changing, non-cellular 5G RF mesh connectivity which uses license-exempt spectrum. With the rising demand for larger amounts of data in shorter time frames, both companies are convinced that smart metering is evolving into the main clearing point between energy systems and “behind-the-meter” assets. Backed by the combined experience of deploying more than 13 million smart meters around the globe, the companies will demonstrate their future-proof solutions as part of the ESMIG Interoperability Demo at ENLIT Europe, October 22-24, 2024.

Combining strengths for enhanced smart metering

Netinium’s next-generation, multi-vendor smart meter head-end system (HES) replaces vendor-proprietary systems and offers agnostic processes for device life-cycle management, security key management and data collection. Their platform helps utilities to manage the long-term evolution of smart meter infrastructures and to lower operational costs, improve efficiency, and enhance innovation and agility. It is expandable to go beyond smart metering, offering a roadmap to control EV, PV and storage.

Wirepas brings its pioneering mesh network technology based on the latest NR+ standard. By using dedicated, license-free spectrum, Wirepas avoids interference and congestion, greatly improving quality of service and enhancing reliability at scale and range. Wirepas innovation ensures business continuity for utilities, as meters form the network without requiring an operator—offering full transparency and control to the utility sector. Their decentralized mesh network allows for massive-scale and rapid deployments without traditional infrastructure.

NR+ Standard

“Decentralized energy systems require transparent, decentralized methods of collecting data while building on a strong ecosystem of solid players like Netinium. The NR+ standard permits the utilization of dedicated, free spectrum, and with the Wirepas mesh implementation, both scale and integration into existing ecosystems are part of the design. We are happy to build on the shared values of a democratized energy system with Netinium,” says Jani Vehkalahti, SVP Smart Energy at Wirepas.

Higher cost-effectiveness

“Achieving improved quality of service for connectivity results in higher cost-effectiveness at the system level. With NR+ and Wirepas, we can leverage the economies of scale built into our multi-vendor head-end system without sacrificing reliability or limiting choices for the utility, a key value in the ever-increasing inclusion of new energy management related devices” says Ferry Cserep, CEO of Netinium.
