NKT to supply HV export cables to Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm

NKT Victoria | T&D India

NKT has been mandated to supply offshore export power cables, accessories and undertake cable installation for the Dogger Bank C offshore wind farm in the North Sea

It may be recalled that in November last year, NKT had entered into a Preferred Supplier Agreement (PSA) as main contractor for delivery and installation of high-voltage DC onshore and offshore export cable systems to Dogger Bank C — the third phase of the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

NKT has now announced that it secured the contract award with the project owners Equinor (50 per cent) and SSE Renewables (50 per cent). The contract award is subject to Dogger Bank C reaching financial closure in late 2021.  The order is valued at an estimated at 230 million euros (around Rs.2,000 crore).

The Dogger Bank offshore wind farm will have a total installed capacity of 3.6 GW, coming from three components—Dogger Bank A, Dogger Bank B and Dogger Bank C—each of 1.2 GW. When fully commissioned the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm will be the world’s largest and the first HVDC-connected wind farm in the UK.

The order for NKT comprises the manufacture and delivery of more than 2×250 km total system length of 320kV DC offshore export power cables, accessories as well as installation by the cable-laying vessel NKT Victoria. Manufacturing is expected from 2022 and with planned commissioning in 2026.

NKT was also awarded the export power cable system for Dogger Bank A and Dogger Bank B, in 2019.

According to NKT President & CEO Alexander Kara, “I am very proud that our sustainably produced DC power cable solutions will ensure delivery of renewable energy to up to six million households in the UK.”

The export power cable systems for the full Dogger Bank wind farm with an installed capacity of more than 3.6GW are all being manufactured at the NKT plant in Karlskrona, Sweden which operates on 100 per cent renewable electricity.

It may be noted that while Dogger Bank A and B are joint ventures between SSE Renewables (40 per cent), Equinor (40 per cent) and Eni (20 per cent), Dogger Bank C is a 50:50 joint venture between SSE Renewables and Equinor.
