NTPC, including its subsidiaries and joint ventures, has added over 3 GW of installed capacity during FY22, according to a company statement.
NTPC Group (including NTPC Ltd, its subsidiaries and joint ventures) added 3151.68 mw of installed capacity during FY22, taking the cumulative installed capacity to around 68,962 mw (or roughly 69 GW), as of March 31, 2022. [Capacity addition is net of discontinuation/decommissioning of old generation plants.]
The commercial capacity of NTPC Group stood at 68,302 mw as of March 31, 2022, as against 64,490 mw as of March 31, 2021. Commercial capacity is that part of the installed capacity that has started commercial production.
Much of the addition in FY22 came from coal-fired power plants – 800 mw (Darlipalli, Odisha), 660 mw (Barh, Bihar) and 660 mw (Tanda, Uttar Pradesh). There were also significant additions through renewable energy projects, mainly solar.

According to a research report by ICICI Securities, NTPC Ltd incurred capital expenditure (capex) of Rs.21035 crore in FY22. The comparable figure for NTPC Group was Rs.34,490 crore. NTPC Ltd expects to undertake capex of Rs.22,454 crore in FY23, the report said.
On a cumulative basis, NTPC has spend Rs.29,300 crore on installing FGD (flue gas desulphurization) systems on its coal-fired power plants. FGD capex in FY23 is likely to be Rs.3,400 crore, while that in FY24 is expected to be Rs.4,000 crore, the ICICI Securities report said.
According to the NTPC statement, NTPC imported 2.47 million tonnes of coal in FY22, which was over twice the 0.92 million tonnes in FY21. The share of imported coal in total coal consumption rose sharply to 1.26 per cent in FY22 from 0.54 per cent in FY21.
On a consolidated basis, NTPC Group sold electricity at an average tariff of Rs.3.98 per kwh in FY22, up 5.57 per cent from Rs.3.77 per kwh in FY21.
