NTPC has announced that Unit-3 of its 3×660-mw Nabinagar power plant in Bihar has started commercial operations.

The coal-fired power plant running supercritical technology is owned by Nabinagar Power Generating Company Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd.

In March 2022, NTPC had announced that Unit-3 of the said power plant had started trial operations. The power plant is located at Nabinagar in Aurangabad district of Bihar.

Home state Bihar is reportedly going to receive 84.8 per cent of the electricity generated from Unit-3. Accordingly, this state will be allocated 559 mw. The remaining will be shared by Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and Sikkim.

Unit-1 of the Nabinagar power plant started commercial operations on September 6, 2019 followed by Unit-2 on July 23, 2021.

Bihar will get a total of 1683 mw from the 1980-mw Nabinagar power plant. The eastern state’s share from all NTPC power plants will increase to 5921 mw, it is learnt.

With the full commissioning of the Nabinagar power plant, NTPC Group’s overall commercial capacity now stands at 69016.68 mw. NTPC Group includes NTPC Ltd and the company’s subsidiaries and joint ventures.

It may be mentioned that Nabinagar Power Generating Company Ltd (NPGCL) was incorporated in September 2008 as a joint venture between NTPC and the Bihar state government. However, in the early part of FY19, NPGCL became a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Ltd, after NTPC acquired the entire stake of Bihar government.

The three units of 660-mw of the Nabinagar power plant, now fully operational, represent the first phase of the project. In the second phase, a further capacity of 2,400 mw coming from three units of 800 mw, has been planned.

According to information available, the main plant suppliers to the 3×660-mw Nabinagar power project are: Alstom Bharat Forge Pvt Ltd (boilers) and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (turbine generators). BHEL is also involved in supplying other project components like generator busducts, 400/132kV switchyard, electrostatic precipitators, HT switchgear package, etc.
