NTPC Group, including NTPC’s subsidiaries and joint ventures, has announced the commissioning of new power generation capacities.
Meja Urja Nigam Pvt Ltd (MUNPL) completed trial operations of the second unit of the Meja thermal power plant in Uttar Pradesh. The coal-fired unit has two supercritical units of 660 mw each. The first unit was commissioned in April 2019. With this, the total capacity of the Meja power plant has reached 1,320 mw.
MUNPL is an equal joint venture between NTPC and state power generation utility Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd.
In an independent recent development, NTPC also announced that the 50-mw solar power project of THDC India Ltd in Kerala has also been commissioned. The ground-mounted solar photovoltaic plant is located in the Kasargod Solar Park at Kasargod in the southern state. The plant was commissioned on December 31, 2020.
This is the first solar power plant of hydropower-centric THDC, and has taken THDC’s total installed capacity to 1,587 mw.
THDC India, formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation, is now a subsidiary NTPC. It may be recalled that in March 2020, NTPC acquired 74.496 per cent equity stake in THDC India.
At that time, it may be mentioned, NTPC also acquired complete ownership of North Eastern Electric Power Company (NEEPCO), a Central PSU with power generation and transmission assets in northeastern India.
With the commissioning of the second unit of the Meja plant and the Kasargod solar project, the total capacity of NTPC Group (including subsidiaries and joint ventures) has now reached 63,635 mw.
