A consortium of Patel Engineering and HES Infra has landed a major civil and hydro-mechanical works package for the Luhri hydropower project in Himachal Pradesh.
In a release, Mumbai-headquartered Patel Engineering Ltd said that “Luhri Hydro Power Consortium (LHPC)” — a consortium between Patel Engineering (lead member, 60 per cent stake) and HES Infra Pvt Ltd (40 per cent) — has won a Rs.976.50-crore order related to the Luhri hydropower project of Central PSU SJVN Ltd.
The order relates to the Luhri Project (Stage-1 of 210 mw) coming up on River Satlju in the Shimla and Kullu districts of Himachal Pradesh. This project is being implemented by Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (SJVNL) on Build-Own-Operate-Maintain (BOOM) basis, with a total investment of around Rs.1,810 crore.

According to a government release issued in November 2020, the Luhri Project (Stage-1 of 210 mw) is expected to generate 758.20 million kwh of electricity annually.

The Luhri Stage-I Hydro Electric Project shall be commissioned within a span of 62 months. The power generated from the Project will help in providing grid stability and will improve the power supply position. Besides adding valuable renewable energy to the Grid, the project would also lead to reduction of 6.1 lakh tones of carbon dioxide from environment annually, thus contributing to improvement in air quality.
The construction activities of the project will result in direct & indirect employment to around 2000 persons and will contribute to overall socioeconomic development of the State. Further, Himachal Pradesh will benefit with free power worth around Rs.1,140 crore from Luhri Stage-I Hydro Electric Project, during the project lifecycle of of 40 years. The project affected families will be provided with 100 kwh of free electricity per month for ten years, it is learnt.
