Power Mech Projects Ltd has landed its first order in the nuclear power space.
In a release, Power Mech Projects said that it has won an order valued at Rs.563.23 crore placed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd, for civil works associated with an upcoming nuclear power plant of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) in Karnataka.
The order, to be completed in 32 months, and with a service guarantee period of 12 months involves civil, structural, and architectural works of turbine island package of NPCIL’s 2 x 700 MWe, PHWR, Kaiga Atomic Power Project (Units 5 and 6) in Uttar Kannada district of Karnataka.
The detailed scope of work includes number of segments covering civil, electrical, and structural works like turbine-generator (TG) building, foundation for all equipment, chemical lab, storage tanks, peripheral drains, sewage network, storm water drains, culverts, plinth protection, pipes and cable bay, condenser cooling water pipes, plumbing and sanitary works etc.
“This order represents Power Mech’s expansion, of its existing industrial civil works capability, into nuclear power projects sector,” the release said.

Owned by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd, the Kaiga atomic power project in Karnataka currently has an installed capacity of 880 mw coming from four pressurized heavy water reactor (PHWR)-based units of 220 mw each, commissioned progressively from November 2000 to January 2011. The two new units (Unit 5 and Unit 6) discussed in this story, when commissioned, will take the power station’s total capacity to 2,280 mw. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd is the EPC contractor for the turbine island package and steam generator package for the upcoming Unit 5 and Unit 6 of the Kaiga atomic power plant.
