Siemens has partnered and implemented latest tunnel automation and digital technologies for the prestigious “Atal Tunnel”.

Atal Tunnel’ is one of the world’s longest and highest-altitude tunnels and will be inaugurated by Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. The tunnel will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km.

The total length of the tunnel located at ‘Rohtang Pass’ is 9.02 km and is at an elevation of 3,100m (10,000 feet), which makes it the world’s longest at this altitude.

Manali lies in the state of Himachal Pradesh while Leh is in the Union Territory of Ladakh.

Siemens’ technologies provide electrification, automation and digitalization solutions for local and remote monitoring, connectivity, lighting, ventilation, power distribution and fire safety systems within one of the world’s longest and highest altitude tunnels.

State-of-the-art technologies from Siemens will boost operational efficiency and safety at altitudes of 10,000 feet-plus and with climatic temperatures ranging between -15◦C to +20◦C.

Sunil Mathur, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Siemens Ltd, said, “We would like to congratulate the Government on this achievement. Siemens is indeed proud to be associated with such a historic and high-technology project, which is not only essential to enhance the movement of people and goods across long distances but is also a critical security requirement. Siemens installed its latest technologies here to ensure that the electrical, ventilation and fire safety systems can be deployed and continuously monitored in a completely reliable and safe manner under the most challenging environmental conditions – a first-of-its-kind worldwide.”

Note: According to information independently available, the Rohtang tunnel (to be officially called “Atal Tunnel”) has been named after the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who had announced the project on June 3, 2000. The construction work of this tunnel was entrusted to Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The tunnel is reportedly scheduled for inauguration on October 3, 2020.
