SJVN, in a release, said that it has inaugurated what is India’s first multipurpose green hydrogen pilot project.
The multipurpose project, a combined heat and power facility, is located at the 1,500-mw Nathpa Jhakri hydropower station in Jhakri, Himachal Pradesh.
Ms Geeta Kapur, Chairman & Managing Director, SJVN, inaugurated 20Nm3/hr electrolyzer and 25kW fuel cell capacity based state-of-the-art green hydrogen pilot project. (See photograph).
This project is nation’s first combined heat & power (CHP) green hydrogen generation plant with capability to cater to the high velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) coating facility of NJHPS for meeting its combustion fuel requirements in addition to generating electricity through its 25kW capacity fuel cell.
The project will produce hydrogen gas by splitting hydrogen and oxygen from water with the help of an alkaline electrolyzer of 20Nm3/hr capacity by utilizing renewable energy supplied from the 1.31-mw Solar Power Plant of SJVN located in Wadhal, Himachal Pradesh.
This pilot project is set to produce 14 kg of green hydrogen per day, during eight hours of operation which will be stored in six storage tanks with total storage capacity of 12 cubic meters at 30 bar pressure. The green hydrogen will be utilized for HVOF Coating of turbine underwater parts in addition to generating electricity through its 25kW capacity Fuel Cell.
“Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission of Government of India, SJVN’s Green Hydrogen Pilot Project is poised to accelerate the development of green hydrogen production infrastructure in the power sector, establishing green hydrogen as a clean energy source,” noted Ms Kapur.
