Substation capacity addition in the first five months (April to August) of current fiscal year FY25 has met only 43 per cent of the target.
As against 42,230 MVA of substation capacity planned for addition in the April-August period of FY25, actual addition stood at just 18,270 MVA, implying only 43 per cent target achievement.
Here are some more observations:
- Of the 18,270 MVA added in the period under study, 6,015 MVA came on the interstate transmission system (ISTS) side while the majority 12,255 MVA was on the intrastate (InSTS) network. The entire ISTS addition was effected by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL).
- PGCIL added 3,000 MVA of transformation capacity (all ISTS) during April-August FY25 at the 765kV voltage level, which was achieved through augmentation of the Padghe GIS substation in Maharashtra (1,500 MVA) and Fatehgarh-II Pooling Station in Rajasthan (1,500 MVA).
- State transmission utilities added 11,940 MVA during the April-August period of FY25. Though this accounted for 65 per cent of the total addition in the period, it was still substantially short of the targeted 23,465 MVA.
- While addition by the state government sector was well distributed amongst various utilities, Uttar Pradesh Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (UPPTCL) made a significant contribution of nearly 3,000 MVA during the April-August period of FY25.
- Private sector entities made nil contribution to transformation capacity addition in the April-August period of FY25. Private sector entities are usually associated with the ISTS. The reason for zero capacity addition during the current fiscal year so far is that several private sector ISTS schemes have been missing their completion schedule. Around 4,820 MVA of transformation capacity associated with private sector ISTS schemes was expected to commission in Q1 (April to June) of FY25, but this had not materialized till end-August 2024.
- In FY23 and FY24, no HVDC-based power transmission infrastructure (lines or substations) was added. No such infrastructure is planned for in FY25 as well.
- For the whole of FY25, the target for total transformation capacity addition stands at 1,16,490 MVA as against 70,728 MVA actually added in FY24.
