Tata Power has introduced an innovative “tower within tower” design for upgrading its 110kV transmission network in Mumbai.
Tata Power Company has introduced new narrow-based towers by replacing the old 110kV power transmission towers by implementing the innovative “tower within tower” concept. Such towers can be erected inside existing tower space without compromising safety and quality.
Tata Power Company has set up four new such towers in Kalyan and more such towers are to be set up along the transmission corridor in Diva and Mumbra areas.
This unique approach will address typical problems associated with replacement of existing transmission line towers, especially in metropolitan cities like Mumbai where conventional replacement of towers cab be very difficult given the high cost associated with land compensation and acquisition. Such projects are often delayed due to compensation and other land related issues, Tata Power said.
According to a spokesperson of Tata Power, “In the innovative process of ‘Tower within Tower’, the old tower does not have to be completely removed. The new tower can be erected in a small space inside the old tower. This innovation, which can speed up the pending projects of transmission lines, reduces the cost of tower construction compared to conventional methods, resulting in 30 per cent time saving. These new towers will take less than a month to construct.”

This is the first time an innovation of such nature has been done for 110kV lines in Mumbai. Tata Power Company has a total of 3,000 transmission towers of 110kV and new (narrow based) towers are to be erected only inside the old towers. Tata Power Company has set up four new such towers in Kalyan and more such towers are to be set up along the transmission corridor in Diva and Mumbra areas.
This innovative concept has helped Tata Power to ensure reliable power supply to consumers across Mumbai by reducing outage duration and also help in completing long pending projects in less time, Tata Power said.
