Tata Power has recorded lower AT&C losses in its Odisha discoms during the third quarter (Q3: October to December) of FY24.

According to an investor presentation filed by Tata Power on stock exchanges, three of the company’s four discoms in Odisha showed lower AT&C losses, year-on-year, during Q3 of FY24.

Tata Power has four discoms in Odisha – TP Central Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPCODL), TP Southern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPSODL), TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL) and TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPNODL).

Each of these is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Odisha government with the private partner holding majority 51 per cent stake and management control.

As can be seen in the table, except for TPSODL, all the discoms have shown lower AT&C losses in Q3FY24, vis-à-vis Q3FY23.

According to an analysis by T&D India, the overall AT&C losses of all the four Odisha discoms (weighted by electricity purchase) stood at a lower 13.3 per cent in Q3FY24 as compared with 15.6 per cent in Q3FY23.

It may be mentioned that the actual AT&C losses in each of the four discoms in Q3FY24 were much lower than the target envisaged in the vesting order.

Metering and substations

Meanwhile, Tata Power has collectively installed around 3.61 lakh smart meters in its four Odisha discoms, till December 31, 2024.

With respect to replacement of legacy meters, in Q3FY24 a total of 2.3 lakh meters were replaced across all the four discoms, taking the cumulative number to around 28 lakh.

In Q3FY24, Tata Power undertook automation of 31 substations. As of December 31, 2023, a total of 615 substations across all the four discoms were automated.

Distribution business

Odisha, with 9.47 million consumers, is Tata Power’s biggest asset in its power distribution portfolio. Tata Power serves 0.76 million consumers in Mumbai and 2.02 million in Delhi. In each of these three areas, Tata Power is a distribution licensee. Tata Power also has a distribution franchise in Ajmer (Rajasthan) where it caters 0.16 million consumers through TP Ajmer Distribution Ltd.
