Tata Power has seen overall reduction in AT&C losses in its power distribution business in Odisha, during the first quarter (Q1: April to June) of FY25.
According to an investor presentation filed on stock exchanges, Tata Power saw lower year-on-year AT&C losses in Q1FY25 with respect to two licensees – TP Central Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPCODL) and TP Southern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPSODL). In the case of TP Northern Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPNODL), AT&C losses remained unchanged while such losses slightly worsened in the case of TP Western Odisha Distribution Ltd (TPWODL).
According to calculations made by T&D India, the overall AT&C losses in Odisha, weighted by electricity purchase, fell to around 27.6 per cent in Q1FY25 from 29.2 per cent in Q1FY24.
However, the actual AT&C losses in each of the distribution licensee companies are still higher than the targeted AT&C losses, as per the vesting order. (See table)
Tata Power currently has around 9.51 million consumers in Odisha, which represent 76 per cent of the company’s total consumers in the power distribution business. Apart from Odisha, Tata Power is a distribution licensee in Delhi (2.05 million consumers) and Mumbai (0.77 million). In Ajmer, Tata Power is a distribution franchisee, serving 0.17 million consumers.
The distribution licensee activities in Odisha and Delhi are being carried out in joint venture with the respective state governments with Tata Power owing controlling 51 per cent equity stake.
Odisha upgrade
In Q1FY25, Tata Power replaced a total of 1.7 lakh energy meters in Odisha taking the cumulative achievement to 32 lakh meters, as of June 30, 2024. During the same period 13 substations were automated taking the overall number to 738 as at the end of Q1FY25.
As of June 30, 2024, Tata Power had 6.61 lakh smart meters across the four distribution licensee areas in Odisha. The command area of TPWODL had the highest number of smart meters, at 2.62 lakh.
Smart meter deployment
The Tata Power presentation also said that during Q1FY25, a total of 12.36 lakh smart meters were installed in the company’s licensee areas covering Mumbai, Delhi and Odisha.
AT&C losses in Delhi
In the Delhi distribution licensee business, run by Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd, AT&C losses rose to 7 per cent in Q1FY25 from 6 per cent in the same period of FY24. This was a result of higher demand coupled with lower collection efficiency. In Q1FY25, electricity sales stood at 3,165 MU, up 20.5 per cent from 2,626 MU in Q1FY24. On the other hand, revenue per unit fell to Rs.9.45 from Rs.9.70 in Q1FY24.
