Tata Power wins 100-mw solar project in Maharashtra

Vikram

Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd has received the letter of award from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co. Ltd. (MSEDCL)  to develop a 100-mw solar project in Maharashtra.

Electricity generated from this plant will be supplied to MSEDCL, the state power distribution utility, under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that will become effective from the scheduled operation date. The project is expected to be commissioned within 18 months from the date of execution of the PPA, a company release said. Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tata Power.

Tata Power’s renewable capacity will increase to 3,557 mw, out of which 2,637 mw is operational.

TPREL has won this capacity in a bid announced by MSEDCL under Phase V dated December 2019. The tender was for procurement of power from intra-state grid connected solar projects.

Speaking on this achievement, Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, said, “We are proud to announce that we have been awarded  100 mw solar project in Maharashtra,  and are thankful to the Government of Maharashtra and the officials at MSEDCL for this opportunity. With this award the cumulative capacity of renewables will be 3,557 mw.”

“We are pleased to announce our win and will continue to demonstrate our strong commitment towards renewable energy as well as project development, engineering and execution capabilities. We hope to continue to build on our capabilities, deliver over expectations and create high benchmarks all around.” said Ashish Khanna, President-Renewables, Tata Power.

The plant is expected to generate about 240 million kwh of energy per year and will annually offset approximately 240 million kg of CO2.

Tata Power’s renewable capacity will increase to 3,557 mw, out of which 2,637 mw is operational. The remaining 920 mw includes this 100-mw project in Maharashtra.

It may be recalled that TPREL recently clinched a 120-mw solar project in Gujarat.

MSEDCL tender undersubscribed

According to information available with T&D India, MSEDCL in December 2019 came out with a tender to procure 500 mw of solar power to be transmitted using the intrastate power grid. As against the targeted 500 mw, MSEDCL could secure only 350 mw. Apart from the 100-mw project awarded to Tata Power (discussed above), Avaada Energy bid for 250 mw. There were only two bidders for this tender. The final outcome of Avaada Energy’s bid is not immediately known.
