Power distribution utilities of Telangana are preparing to roll out a real-time data acquisition system (RTDAS), with a view to ensuring quality and uninterrupted power supplies.
According to a reliable media report, the two state government-owned discoms of Telangana — Northern Power Distribution Company of Telangana Ltd (NPDCTL) and Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (TSSPDCL) – are in an advanced stage of completing the RTDAS project across the southern state.
The report said that RTDAS will be operational effective mid-August 2021. Currently, work on upgrade of electrical substations is in progress.
Thanks to the RTDAS, power utilities in the state will now be able to monitor power flow from points of generation to points of consumption even down to the appliances level. This will enable utilities to control power flow or regulate the load to match generation in real time (or very close to real time), the report said.
Any interruption or fluctuation at any feeder level can be instantaneously identified and rectified from the control room at the district and state headquarters. This can ensure 24×7 uninterrupted and quality power to the consumer, the report said.

According to information available with T&D India, in March 2019, TSSPDCL was in the process of inviting bids from potential suppliers of hardware and software associated with the RTDAS project. The utility intended to take up RTDAS for measurement of SAIFI/SAIDI in 34 feeders of 11kV, located in non-SCADA towns, covered under R-APDRP and IPDS.SAIFI and SAIDI are commonly-used reliability indices of power supply standing for System Average Interruption Duration/Frequency Index, respectively.
According to a technical report by Power Finance Corporation, the nodal agency for implementing the Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), the objective of RTDAS is to accurately measure reliability of power distribution network and facilitate utility to take suitable administrative action for enhancement of power reliability. The measurement of reliability shall be ensured by a real time data acquisition system (RT-DAS) using FRTU at substation. It shall also facilitate utility to take appropriate measures for improvement of SAIDI/SAIFI by knowing the reason of poor values of indices. SAIFI/SAIDI report for 11KV /22KV feeder, S/S and town measurement shall be generated
