The quantum of transmission line addition during the first seven months (April to October) of FY23 has met just 52 per cent of the target set for the period.

According to latest statistics released by Central Electricity Authority (CEA), India added 7,042 ckm of transmission lines during the April-October period of ongoing fiscal year FY23. This was 52 per cent of the 13,501 ckm targeted for the period.

While all ownership groups – Central government, state government and private sector – fell short of the targeted transmission line addition, it was the state government sector that faltered the most.

State power transmission utilities could add only 3,835 ckm of lines as against the planned 8,848 ckm. This resulted in a target achievement ratio of 43.3 per cent. Central utilities (led by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd) and private utilities did relatively better with a target achievement of around 70 per cent (see table).

Of the 7,042 ckm of transmission lines added during the April-October period of FY23, the 765kV class saw addition of 915 ckm. In the 400kV category, the addition was 2,160 ckm while 3,967 ckm of 220kV lines were added.

PGCIL added 212 ckm of 765kV lines, accounting for the entire quantum added by the Central government sector in the April-October period of FY23. The private sector did well adding 703 ckm of 765kV lines – with contributions coming from Adani Transmission (566 ckm) and Sterlite Power (137 ckm).

For the full fiscal year FY23, the target for transmission line addition stands at 17,863 ckm, as against the actual addition of 14,895 ckm in FY22. This implies that if the FY23 target were to be met, India needs to add 10,821 ckm of transmission lines (or 60.6 per cent of the target) in just five months.

It is also important to note that the FY23 target of 17,863 ckm represents a downward revision of 15.3 per cent from the original target of 21,098 ckm, as envisaged at the beginning of FY23.
