UP discom cancels smart meter tender

Uttar Pradesh state-owned power distribution company Madhyanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (MVVNL) has reportedly cancelled a tender relating to smart meter deployment that was awarded to Adani Group.

According to reliable media reports, MVVNL, which caters to power supply in the Lucknow region, cancelled the tender due to “unavoidable” reasons. The utility had invited bids for supply and installation of 75 lakh (0.75 crore) smart meter for which Adani Group had emerged as the lowest bidder with an aggregate quote of Rs.5,400 crore, translating into a bid of Rs.7,200 per meter.

Among the bidders that Adani Group got the better of, included GMR Group, Larsen & Toubro, and IntelliSmart Infrastructure.

More tenders

Along with MVVNL, three other state discoms —Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (DVVNL), Purvanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (PuVVNL) and Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Ltd (PVVNL) – are also in the process of finalizing similar tenders for smart prepaid meter deployment.

The combined size of these tenders, including that of MVVNL, is around 2.5 crore smart meters.  Reports suggest that Adani Group had bid for tenders floated by all the four utilities.
