Vedanta Aluminium, the aluminium business of Vedanta Ltd, has made the highest purchase of green energy on Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) in the first quarter of FY22.

In a release Vedanta Aluminium said that it procured 354 million kwh (million units or MU) of solar and non-solar renewable energy from the Green Term –Ahead Market (GTAM) on IEX during the first quarter (April to June) of FY22. This purchase accounted for over 35 per cent of the total green energy traded on IEX in the given period.

This green procurement was made to meet the energy requirement of Vedanta Aluminium’s largest integrated aluminium facility at Jharsuguda in Odisha. Vedanta Aluminium, with facilities at Korba (Chhattisgarh) and Jharsuguda (Odisha) is India’s largest integrated aluminum producer accounting for over half of the country’s total aluminium production in FY21.

“IEX is a premiere energy marketplace and is the largest power exchange in the country. GTAM, introduced last year by IEX, supports buyers in procuring green energy in the most competitive and flexible manner. The purchase of green power from the exchange has enabled organisations like Vedanta and the industry at large to achieve their carbon-mitigation targets while producing ‘green’ value-added products,” the Vedanta Aluminium release said.
